We’ve got some big news that’s sure to surprise you! Former The Young and the Restless star Darcy Rose Burns, who played Abby Newman, is making waves in Hollywood with her latest role. While her career has taken an unexpected turn, it’s certainly not what you might assume. Burns is currently captivating audiences in Los Angeles with her performance in Reefer Madness, a satirical musical that parodies a 1936 marijuana propaganda film.
In this stage production, Burns portrays Mary Lane, a virtuous young woman who, along with her clean-cut boyfriend Jimmy Harper, is led astray by their experimentation with marijuana. This 25th-anniversary production, which is being produced by Kristen Bell, Christian Campbell, and Alan Cumming, has been a massive hit. The show is currently running at the Whitley Theater and has been extended through August 18. Burns has described her experience as a dream come true, especially since she’s stepping into a role famously originated by Kristen Bell in the original Off-Broadway production in 2001 and the 2005 Showtime movie adaptation.
Burns has expressed her excitement about the opportunity to perform in a role that has such a storied history and to have the support of Kristen Bell, who made the role famous. She also hinted that this may not be her last musical performance. She fondly remembers her first day on set, where Eric Braden, who played Victor Newman, made quite an impression by tearing up the script and showing her how to approach scenes with spontaneity and professionalism. Burns looks back on her time with Braden and the rest of the cast with great appreciation, noting the valuable lessons she learned from them.
Her time on the show lasted for five years until her character underwent the soap opera trope of rapid aging. Although she was initially upset by the sudden change, Burns has since embraced the opportunity to explore new projects. The transition allowed her to pursue other interests and opportunities, though she still holds a special place in her heart for the show and her co-stars.
