Summer scheduling has led to Casualty being cancelled for weeks but viewers will be pleased to know the soap is due for an imminent return.

With football dominating the TV landscape, soap-deprived viewers have recently been forced to adapt to a long string of changes to their schedules. And while the UEFA European Championship is set to end on July 14, 2024, Wimbledon became the second sporting event to cause disruption, kicking off on Monday, July 1.

To top it all off, Casualty fans were disappointed when the live coverage of Glastonbury Festival forced BBC One bosses to scrap the medical drama from its usual slot on Saturday, June 29. Once again, their patience will be put to the test.

The long-running BBC show will not be aired this Saturday (July 6) as the Beeb focuses its attention on Wimbledon from 7.30pm, right after Match of the Day’s coverage of the Euro 2024. BBC One’s Wimbledon commentary will then be followed by Michael McIntyre’s The Wheel from 9pm – Casualty’s regular time slot.

Viewers have recently been kept at the edge of their seats with the programme’s latest miniseries, Storm Damage, which featured new arrivals – from rival soaps EastEnders and ITV’s Emmerdale – and plenty of drama.

So far, the BBC has aired two episodes of the twelve-parter, the latest instalment ending in a jaw-dropping cliff-hanger revealing that Holby’s clinical lead Siobhan McKenzie was married to Rich Walker – Stevie Nash’s new lover. But while tension is building up in the ED, viewers also spotted hints of chemistry between fan favourite Dylan Keogh and newcomer Sophia Peters. Luckily, fans won’t have to wait long to know what is ahead.

Things are set to get back to normal for Casualty viewers on Saturday, July 13, as the popular series will return to our screens but Wimbledon will still have an impact on the schedule. BBC One will air coverage of the tournament’s penultimate day from 1.15pm. However, tennis fans will have to migrate over to BBC Two from 6.30pm, with Casualty finally aired on its regular channel earlier than usual, at 8.20pm.

In recent, Casualty star Melanie Hill, aka Siobhan, responded to rumours she was leaving the show after recently moving to Cardiff to be closer to the set of the series. The former Coronation Street actress had previously resided in Manchester for her stint in the ITV soap.

“My kids have flown the nest – one’s in Australia and one’s in Portsmouth – so we’ve not really got any ties now – we’re footloose and fancy free. I’m not that keen on commuting, so it’s a bit of a pattern and me and my husband now really make the most of where I’m working”, Melanie said.

“We go everywhere together – we were going to move to Glasgow when I did Waterloo Road and we moved to Manchester when I was in Coronation Street. We try to find the best in wherever we end up and actually we’ve decided we really love it in Cardiff, so we might stay permanently.”

She’d then dismissed rumours she’d be leaving Casualty, adding: “As long as my brain keeps going, I’m quite happy to carry on working. I love it and I love the routine.”
